His speech “The Meaning of July Fourth for the Negro” was one of he well known speeches. He presented it on July 5, 1852. He was appointed as the first african american US Marshal. He published 2 autobiographies. The first one was My Bondage and My Freedom in 1855 and the second was Life and Times of Frederick Douglass in 1881. He escaped from slavery. His father was white and his mother was a black slave. He believed that the Civil War was a moral battle and that moral battles were justifiable. He could read and write. This meant he had better communication skills than most other slaves.
